We had utilize this prominent site to design a building not only to reflect the city of Pretoria where it is situated, but to also adhere to the Client’s commitment to quality architecture. The design should also reflect the progressive visions of the tenants.
The site is a very visible triangular site in Waterkloof where two extremely busy streets intersect. The property is also divided into two by a water course, lined out with stone gabion baskets. The southern bank was planted with White Stinkwood trees by the owner some time ago, and amongst these mature trees the building was to be placed. The northern portion of the site was to be landscaped to compliment the new building.
We designed two rectangular red office blocks carefully placed, not to sacrifice one tree and to grow out of the gabion basket wall of the water coarse. Not to design a ‘look at me’ commercial building that seems to be the norm nowadays, it is ‘hidden’ by a planted hedge.
The vigorous grower, Scented Star Jasmin, is supported by a 4m steel structure with irrigated concrete planters at a higher level to assist the creeper that is planted in the ground to cover the mesh steel structure.
The hedge forms a natural sun protection screen around the building allowing ample fenestration all around the building. The Scented Star Jasmine constantly reminds the occupants in the building of nature outside instead of overlooking the constant traffic flow around the building.
The hedge is strategically punctured by the glass boxes housing the boardrooms allowing views over the landscaped garden and the golf course next door.
The juxtapose positioned office boxes create in between spaces populated by the saved trees. Private step out spaces protected by the hedge are created between the buildings with a large entertainment area to the west with seating, outside kitchen and a floating steel chimney above the braai pit.
The interior is simple with the same pallet as outside. Interest is created by geometric shapes and the off placement of circulation elements in the entrance lobby.
